Natural Horse Taming

This method uses positive actions to tame and/or teach the horse, giving the horse confidence and security in its work and in the relationship that is formed with the trainer.

This is achieved by forming a relationship of trust, respect and harmony between the trainer and the horse. This first relationship is the base of all future relationships between this horse and other people.

The horse is taught to work in the round corral and at the same time it is introduced to working on a lunging rope, making use of voice commands and body positions as well as certain implements (lunging rope, lunge whip, fixed reins, long reins etc). The work on the lunging rope and the round corral improve the horse's aerobic capacity and muscles. What is important during the taming procedure is that the trainer should have clear objectives for each exercise and must know when it is time to stop.

The riding stage is when the horse acquires a mental wholeness and reaffirms the skills and abilities learnt in the previous stages of training. By alternating work in the paddock and rides out, the horse attains self-confidence and trust in his rider. A horse is ready once it can work at the three gaits, can canter on either hand, can turn correctly, stop, rein back, respond to leg commands, and can work both collected and stretched out.
